VTP – Transdiagnostic Vulnerability in Psychopathology

Characterizing the psychopathological dimensions underlying classified psychiatric disorders represents a central challenge in modern and contemporary psychiatry.

In particular, Anomalous Self Experiences may include a sense of generalized numbness, a pervasive sense of inner emptiness, difficulty perceiving one’s own self, an impairment of the sense of “belonging” to the world, and even anomalous perceptions of the body and the boundaries of one’s self. Although these experiences have been identified and studied primarily in psychotic spectrum disorders, they can also manifest in other psychopathological conditions.

The VTP project is a multicenter study coordinated by the Careggi University Hospital in Florence, in collaboration with the universities of Pavia, Parma, and Rome Tor Vergata. It aims to characterize anomalous experiences of the self in the general population and in patients with various diagnoses (psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and autism spectrum disorder).

In addition to self-administered questionnaires and clinical scales, participants will complete source monitoring tasks and use devices for self-monitoring of heart rate and peripersonal space to complement subjective reports with objective measures.
